Tasmanian Government’s purchase of the Derwent Entertainment Centre advances JackJumpers NBL debut

Tasmanian Government’s purchase of the Derwent Entertainment Centre advances JackJumpers NBL debut
November 10, 2020

The Tasmanian Government has announced that it has completed the purchase of the Derwent Entertainment Centre (DEC) and adjoining land from the Glenorchy City Council, paving for the venue’s redevelopment.

Set to be the home of the Tasmania JackJumpers in the NBL as of the competition’s 2021/22 season, the purchase coincides with agreements with the Melbourne-based LK Group to facilitate the redevelopment of the venue and the future operation and management of the facility.

Welcoming the purchase, Tasmanian Premier Peter Gutwein stated yesterday “I’m thrilled to be able to announce that we have reached the next major milestone in the DEC redevelopment.

“Local firm VOS Construction is on-site from today to commence preliminary works on-site at the DEC, which are expected to be completed by Christmas.”

LK Group Chairman Larry Kestelman said “with this upgrade, the DEC will be transformed into a world class entertainment and events venue. We are excited to announce that one of Australia’s premier artists Guy Sebastian has been booked to perform at the newly renovated DEC on November 22 next year.

“We look forward to welcoming concerts, conventions and other major sporting events, including the Tasmania JackJumpers, to the DEC and thank the Tasmanian Government and Glenorchy City Council for their support for this project which will boost jobs, tourism and economic activity for the state.”

Tasmania JackJumpers Chief Executive, Simon Brookhouse added “this is an exciting day for the NBL and major events here in Tasmania. With this renovation, the DEC will be transformed into a world class entertainment venue and we can’t wait to host the first game featuring the Tasmania JackJumpers next year.

“Over 2,200 foundation members have already signed up with the JackJumpers and we encourage all Tasmanians to sign up and join the march as we prepare to launch Tasmania’s new national sporting team.”

The purchase of the DEC and adjoining land also means the Government has secured the land required to deliver the four-court community multisport facility which is expected to commence in mid-2021.

Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Recreation Jane Howlett went on to advise “tenders for the design, planning and oversight of construction of the $20 million indoor multi-sport facility recently closed, with nine submissions received and currently being assessed.

“The new facility will provide fit-for purpose, multi-use courts and sports facilities for a range of sports including futsal, netball, basketball, volleyball and gymnastics, and will meet the growing needs of the community and importantly encourage more Tasmanians to participate in sport.”

The LK Group has retained the services of former Glenorchy City Council employee Renee Brown as Venue Manager.

LK Group operates worldwide across a diverse range of industries including: property; technology; human resources; business transformation and outsourcing; digital animation and sport.
