Sport administrators and elite level competitions receive support from Tasmanian Government
The Tasmanian Government has advised that it has provided significant support to administrators in the sport and recreation sector throughout COVID-19, in recognition of their role in bringing communities together while also announcing their assistance for sport and recreation organisations to host elite level competitions.
Tranche One of the State Government’s COVID-19 Sports and Recreation Assistance Package kept more than 180 Tasmanian sporting administrators in work despite the loss of revenues from the postponement of competitions.
Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Jane Howlett notes “I am proud that our Government has been able to provide funding of over $2.9 million to support the sector, which has helped keep Tasmanians employed and assisted clubs and organisations to resume competition in a COVID Safe way.
Minister Howlett has also recently announced that Tranche Two has now closed with 431 organisations having been approved for grants to help them return to play with more than $900,000 allocated directly to clubs.
Minister Howlett adds “having attended many sporting matches over the last few months, I have seen first-hand what this support has meant to clubs across all sporting codes. Our Government understands the impact COVID-19 has had on the state’s sporting community and I thank everyone for their patience and commitment during this challenging time.”
The Tasmanian Government also supports Tasmanians participating in sport and leading a healthy and active lifestyle and providing opportunities to host elite level competitions.
Applications for the grants under the annual National/International Sport Championships Program 2020-21 are now open.
Under these grants, $40,000 will be provided to eligible sporting organisations to host national and international championships within Tasmania between 12th October 2020 and 30th November 2021.
In 2019-20, the program provided funding of $40,000 to 13 sport and recreation organisations to assist with the hosting of championships, including the Mountain Bike Australia, National Gravity Enduro Championships, the Paddle Australia Canoe Slalom Age Championships, and the Triathlon Tasmania Inc, Paratriathlon World Series.
The 2020-21 program will be especially important as sporting organisations around the state recover and rebuild from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The program will be open for applications until 14th May 2021, or until program funds are exhausted.
