read moreThe Tasmanian Government has committed to supporting the state’s sport and recreation sector in their recovery and rebuilding from COVID-19 by extending its basketball school clinics funding agreement with Tasmania’s three NBL1 clubs for a further year.
Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Jane Howlett advised today “we will provide funding of $250,000 to the clubs ($105,000 to the Hobart Chargers, $85,000 to the Launceston Tornadoes and $55,000 to the North West Thunder, with $5,000 to be retained by Basketball Tasmania) for the 2020-21 financial year.
“Since the initiative began in 2017, our Government has provided a total of $750,000 to the three clubs, allowing them to engage with communities by delivering school basketball clinics around Tasmania.”
In the 2019 calendar year alone, the Hobart Chargers delivered clinics to 10,000 children at Southern Schools, while the Launceston Tornadoes and North West Thunder delivered clinics to a total of 7,000 children at schools in the North and North West of the State.
Minister Howlett added “this is a fantastic opportunity for students to interact and learn from some of the stars of the NBL1 competition, and provides them with a glimpse of the pathway from grassroots competition all the way to the elite level.
“As Minister for Sport and Recreation, I am proud and excited that we can support this vital program for another year, and we will consider extending it further at the end of the 2020-21 financial year.”
