read moreThe Town of Port Hedland has been granted $750,000 to assist with the construction of two covered outdoor multipurpose courts with lighting, a key component of the JD Hardie Youth Zone site masterplan.
The funding is a result of the Western Australian Government’s Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), which aims to increase participation in sport and recreation.
The JD Hardie Youth Zone site masterplan was adopted in July 2019, the result of extensive community consultation on how to improve the facility for the future.
The inclusion of covered, multipurpose courts in the masterplan reflects the need to improve the facility’s sun safety and ensures better community usability.
Advising that the grant funding was vital in progressing the project from the masterplan to the detailed design and development stage, Town of Port Hedland Council Honorary Commissioner Fred Riebeling stated “I’d like to thank the Hon. Mick Murray MLA, Minister for Sport and Recreation, for granting the Town $750,000 as part of the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund.
“The plan for outdoor multipurpose courts with lighting stemmed from community feedback during the masterplan consultation process, with a number of local sporting organisations voicing support.
“The evolution of the JD Hardie Youth Zone Precinct into a hub of community activity will provide social benefits to Hedland, such as encouraging more physical activity and participation.
“The grant funding is to be claimed in the 2020/21 and 2021/22 financial years for predominantly construction related costs, aligning with the Town’s timeline for the masterplan’s realisation.
“The masterplan construction phase is set to inject a projected $4.5 million into the local economy over three years, creating 11 direct full time jobs and stimulating up to 33 jobs in the broader economy.
“I’d like to thank the Town’s staff and community members for providing invaluable input into this process, and I look forward to the construction of the courts.”
