read moreA $3.3 million upgrade to the 22-year-old Broome Recreation and Aquatic Centre has begun.
With the facility having closed on the 15th August, local building company CWD is replacing the brick-paved concourse, renewing swimming pool bulkheads and tiling, resurfacing the pebblecrete children’s lagoon, improving pool lighting, fully rebuilding the plant room and replacing the plant and filtration systems.
Jointly funded by the Shire of Broome and the Western Australia Department of Sport and Recreation through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund (CSRFF), the building work is expected to take 26 weeks.
Commenting on the project, Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies said the works would increase the capacity and efficiency of the pool, resulting in financial, environmental and health benefits for the Broome community.
Minister Davies also stated “we know that when people are active, not only does it benefit their physical health, but it benefits their mental health too and helps keep them connected to the community.
"The refurbishment will allow the Shire to provide activities year-round and encourage more people to use the facilities during the cooler months."
Minister Davies said the CSRFF, which had funded more than 1,000 projects across Western Australia worth $157 million since 2008, had a direct benefit to participation in community and grassroots sport and recreation.
She added “this is a valuable grants program because providing sporting facilities all across WA encourages people of all ages and abilities to be active.”
