read moreVietnam’s preparations for the hosting of 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) and the 11th ASEAN Para Games (ASEAN Para Games 11) based in the city of Hanoi later this year are moving forward with locations recently confirmed for all competitions.
With events to take place at venues in Hanoi and in neighbouring northern provinces, in Hanoi, My Dinh National Stadium will host track-and-field events and men’s football; Quan Ngua Stadium will host gymnastics; the National Centre for Sport Training and Competition will host events including shooting, weightlifting, athletics and petanque; and various competition halls will host taekwondo, fencing, judo, kurash, wushu, pencak silat, classic wrestling, freestyle wrestling, Vovinam, dance sports and ju-jitsu.
Venues outside Hanoi include Hoa Binh province for road and mountain biking; Bac Ninh province for boxing, kickboxing, tennis, indoor handball and karate; Vinh Phuc province for Muay Thai, golf, triathlon and duathlon; Quang Ninh province for women’s football, volleyball, beach handball, chess and Chinese chess; Hai Phong city for rowing, canoeing and kayaking; Hai Duong province for table tennis; and Bac Giang province for badminton.
Hanoi has also been designated to host the opening and closing ceremonies for both events.
With the Vietnamese Government forced to cut the budget for the Games due to the pandemic, scaling back plans to upgrade some venues, it has looked to maximise revenues by recently appointing Vietnamese agency Vietcontent to manage the media and sponsorship rights for the events.
The sports marketing agency will be responsible for securing local and international broadcasters and sponsors for the Games.
In addition, relevant agencies have been asked to strengthen technical infrastructure to ensure the provision of logistics, transportation, tourism, health and information technology services for each of the Games events.
The municipal People’s Committee has also requested the embellishment of local markets, shops, trade centres and supermarkets, along with the proactive preparation of goods sources to serve international delegations, tourists and fans, ensuring abundance in volume, diversity in forms, quality and food safety.
Under the plan, the city will mobilise young people and students to join the voluntary forces serving activities in the framework of the Games, in addition to arranging tour guides and interpreters to support participating foreign athletes, trainers and visitors. Individuals and mass organisations will also be encouraged to get involved in voluntary activities to serve the Games in the capital.
SEA Games 31 will feature more than 520 competition events in 40 sports, most of which are named in the Asian Games and Olympic Games systems. Meanwhile, ASEAN Para Games 11 will comprise of 14 sports with about 400 competition events.
31st SEA Games will take place from 21st November to 2nd December while the 11th ASEAN Para Games follow from 17th to 23rd December.
This is the second time Vietnam has hosted the regional Games, after the first time in 2003.
