Silver Awards for Doha’s Oxygen Park and Perth’s Optus Stadium at 2019 IOC, IPC and IAKS architecture Awards
November 7, 2019

Perth's Optus Stadium and Oxygen Park in the Qatar capital of Doha have been recognised as the Australian and Asian projects honoured at the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and the International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) international recreation and sport architecture awards presented in the German city of Cologne this week.

In a prize field dominated by projects from Europe and Canada, AECOM architects design for Oxygen Park was a winner in the 2019 IOC IAKS Award Silver category, along with HASSELL, COX Architecture and HKS' work at Optus Stadium.

The Optus Stadium project, which has already secured numerous awards, also secured an IPC IAKS Distinction.

A statement on this award category advised “accessibility is gaining ground in local and community-orientated sports centres.

“The IPC IAKS Distinction thus honours … projects which as a public institution promote an active lifestyle, inclusion and the wellbeing of the community.”

Presented during the 27th International Association for Sports and Leisure Facilities (IAKS) Congress, the biennial awards are the most important international architecture prizes for aquatic, recreation and sport facilities. Commending facilities of exemplary design and function, together with the International Paralympic Committee, IAKS also awards the IPC IAKS Distinction for facilities suitable for persons with a disability.

The IOC IAKS Award brings to public attention exemplary buildings and complexes that integrate sensible sustainability and legacy considerations, strong functional planning and exceptional architectural design.
