read moreThe Victorian Government has committed $1.2 million to complete much needed toilet infrastructure upgrades across four of Melbourne’s most popular metropolitan parks.
With Melbourne’s urban parks experiencing a recent surge in visitation that is predicted to continue over the summer period, the usage has come at the cost of some of parks’ infrastructure and amenities, with many of toilet facilities facing increasing pressure.
A statement from Parks Victoria advises “left unchecked, this is a problem that can have unpleasant and frustrating consequences as toilets are forced to close ... which is why we’re excited to announce that remedies to this problem are on the way.
“Across the state, four of our major parks and reserves will soon receive comprehensive upgrades to their toilet facilities, with an extra $1.2 million in funding in the 2018/19 financial year.”
Braeside Park is host to a burgeoning number of community groups and is one of Melbourne’s most popular parks. This funding will ensure the current toilets will be reopened with a comprehensive upgrade. Dandenong Ranges and Alfred Nicholas Gardens will have a similar boost to its amenities so even more people can enjoy what are already incredibly popular destinations.
The Redwood Forest in Warburton is another area enjoying incredible growth in visitor numbers, spurred on by its beautiful scenery. Over $300,000 is due to be invested in new toilets which will reflect both the area’s growing popularity and need for better facilities.
New and improved toilet facilities will also be introduced in the Mornington Peninsula, again catering to visitor growth to see the area’s unique landscapes, wildlife and heritage.
Commenting on the infrastructure upgrades Simon Talbot, Parks Victoria’s Chief Operating Officer, stated “it’s great to see such growth in visitation to our parks. A corresponding boost in infrastructure caters for this growth will allow even more people to enjoy the beautiful open spaces and surrounds.
"Ensuring that our visitors have access to modern facilities contributes to the creation of a memorable visitor experience.
“Braeside Park, the Dandenong Ranges National Park, Redwood Forest and Point Nepean National Park are all important tourism destinations that attract both local and international visitors. Delivering these upgrades means that everyone who visits these spectacular destinations can continue to enjoy the diverse landscapes, culture and heritage of Victoria.”
