read moreHaving staged the successful swimming program during the 2018 Commonwealth Games, the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre has been re-opened to the public following the removal of its event overlay.
City of Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate has advised that crews had worked tirelessly to dismantle and remove the temporary seating and equipment used for the 60 Commonwealth Games medal events, advising “the Aquatic Centre performed brilliantly for the Games, but it has been closed to the public since 10th February so City staff have been working hard to get it reopened.
"Outside, there is still some re-turfing work to be complete but from today, we're reopen.
"I'm proud of what we've delivered for the Commonwealth Games but I'm equally proud of the legacy that remains for the community. Our city is determined to ensure we maximise the return on our investment with all City venues.”
With its naming rights deal with Optus having ended, the venue will stage the AquaSplash community event on Saturday 23rd June – a free family event that will feature diving and synchronised swimming displays, an inflatable obstacle course and novelty pool races.
Mayor Tate said major city venues are booked out until the end of the year with events like the Netball Australia test match at Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre and the Pan Pacific Master Games for Swimming and Diving, 2018 FINA Grand Prix and the Australian Transplant Games at the Aquatic Centre.
The Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre opened on 4th June and Coomera Indoor Sports Centre is due to reopen on 17th June.
