Optus takes on naming rights for Gold Coast Aquatic Centre

Optus takes on naming rights for Gold Coast Aquatic Centre
February 27, 2018

Telecommunications company Optus is taking on the naming rights for the Gold Coast Aquatics Centre, the main aquatics sports venue at this year’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

The newly-named Optus Aquatic Centre will play host to a series of swimming and diving events at the multi-sport event, which runs from 4th to 15th April.

Optus already had a deal in place to serve as the official support network of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and is also a principal partner of the Swimming Australia national governing body.

As part of its wider involvement in the Games, Optus will provide the event’s communications infrastructure and managed services, which will include a permanent upgrade of 4G services around the Optus Aquatic Centre.

In addition, Optus will boost network coverage during the Games by deploying two portable ‘Cells on Wheels’ at venue.

Ian Smith, Vice-President at Optus and executive lead for the Commonwealth Games, commented “our network infrastructure at the Optus Aquatic Centre will allow fans to share every gold medal moment as it happens to their friends and family around the world.

“Optus is committed to providing a great experience for all athletes, support staff and fans during the Commonwealth Games and our network investment in the Gold Coast will benefit its residents and visitors well after the completion of the games.”

With the Australian Swimming trials for the Commonwealth Games due to commence tomorrow, Queensland Commonwealth Games Minister Kate Jones has assured stakeholders that work at the Optus Aquatic Centre will be completed for the event.

The Centre has been given a facelift ahead of the Games in April with removable grandstands, a new 50 metre pool and a revitalised gym.

Speaking at the weekend Minister Jones said everything is on track, stating “I’m absolutely confident this is going to look world class on Wednesday night when trials start.

“There will be 4000 additional seats for the event, I’m calling on all Gold Coasters to come down and get a feeling of what the event will be like during the Commonwealth Games.”

The trials will run from 28th February to 3rd March.
