read moreThe YMCA NSW (the Y) will create more than 80 new jobs at Canberra’s newest public swimming complex, the Stromlo Leisure Centre, driving significant economic growth in the ACT despite the ongoing strain of COVID-19.
Applications are now open for eight full-time jobs at the new centre, which is due to open in August.
In the coming months upwards of 70 casual and part time roles will also become available covering everything from Fitness Instructors to Lifeguards.
The Y was announced as the manager of the new $36 million facility in March, which includes an eight-lane 50 metre lap and competition pool, a program pool, gym, fitness studio, leisure pool, slide, toddlers’ pool, splash park, café and crèche.
Area Manager, Mathew Pole said the Y will cover the required training costs for a number of the roles noting “the Y are proud that Stromlo Leisure Centre is set to become one of the most significant employers in the Weston Creek, Woden and Molonglo regions.
“Working as part of the Y family unlocks access to great career development opportunities and ongoing training. We know there are incredibly skilled and capable people in the ACT now who due to COVID-19, have found themselves out of work.
“Qualified or not qualified, the Y will cover the required training costs for future Life Guards and Swimming Instructors looking to kick start a new career. We are so proud to work in partnership with the ACT Government on providing these employment and training opportunities and can’t wait to expand our Y family at Stromlo.”
ACT Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry welcomed the recruitment drive and added “this is great news for Canberrans and for this sector who have faced a lot of challenges during this difficult time. With construction on track, the ACT Government’s Stromlo Leisure Centre will be a great addition to the growing Molonglo Valley region and Canberra particularly as restrictions continue to lift for sport and recreational facilities.”
Throughout COVID-19 the Y has supported 90 ACT employees with Job Keeper or ongoing hours, despite the closure of the Canberra Olympic Pool, Gungahlin and Lakeside Leisure Centres to the public on 23rd March.
