Cairns Showfest organisers express sympathy for victim after amusement ride accident

Cairns Showfest organisers express sympathy for victim after amusement ride accident
October 27, 2020

The organisers of the Cairns Showfest event at which a woman plummeted several metres from a carnival ride on Saturday have expressed their deep concern and sympathy for the victim's wellbeing.

In a statement posted to their website, they advised they were “deeply shocked and saddened by an incident” noting "as organisers of Showfest, we have been given absolutely no details of the young lady, or her family, or any specific reasons for the cause of the accident.

"It is also accepted that many people present were thoroughly stressed by the incident, and this is the opposite of what the organisers set out to do by bringing the event to Cairns this week."

The organisers thanked paramedics and police who rushed to the woman's aid, adding "all emergency responders who were exceptional in handling the incident, arriving almost immediately to assist the lady and make practical arrangements. We are grateful for their incredible response."

The injured woman remains in a stable condition at Cairns Hospital, where she was rushed on Saturday evening after falling out of The Hangover ride at the Cairns showgrounds.

Immediately after the incident, paramedics told media the woman, who was rushed to Cairns Base Hospital, sustained serious and traumatic injuries in the fall.

A WorkSafe/Workplace Health and Safety Authority Queensland (WHS) investigation into the incident is ongoing.

Commenting on this, the organisers went on to say "we are working closely with Cairns Police, WHS, and emergency responders, who are investigating the incident."

Passengers on The Hangover ride get rotated a full 360 degrees in chairs on a metal arm, forcing them into an upside-down position at its highest point.

A man who filmed the aftermath and shared it to Facebook said he believed the woman had fallen while she was hanging upside down.

Showfest deleted its Facebook page following the incident, citing concern over speculation and comments about the incident that had been posted. about what happened.
