TRA releases updated tourism profiles for more than 200 local government areas
February 2, 2018

Tourism Research Australia (TRA) has released a series of updated tourism profiles for more than 200 local government areas.

First developed in 2007, the profiles are designed to assist industry and Government decision making and to identify and support investment opportunities, particularly in regional Australia.

Data is drawn from TRA’s International Visitor Survey (IVS) and National Visitor Survey (NVS), along with demographic and business data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Provided for international travel, domestic overnight travel and domestic day travel, the profiles were only prepared for local government areas with adequate IVS and NVS samples, so as to present robust results. Further, data has been  averaged over four years, which minimises the impact of variability in estimates from year to year, and provides for more robust volume estimates.

Local government boundaries - as classified in the 2014 Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) and produced by the ABS - are used as the basis for the profiles.

For the purposes of this publication, TRA classifies all local government areas outside of capital city areas and the Gold Coast as ‘regional’.

In addition, a number of local government areas on the outskirts of these areas are also classified as ‘regional’ (such as Gosford City Council and the Shire of Mornington Peninsula).

local government areas covered include 57 in NSW, 41 in Victoria, 35 in Queensland, 25 in South Australia, 29 in Western Australia, 18 in Tasmania and eight in the Northern Territory.
