Sutherland Council moves forward with Playground Renewal Program

Sutherland Council moves forward with Playground Renewal Program
May 16, 2020

Sutherland Shire Council has been making progress on key infrastructure projects, including its Playground Renewal Program of which a number of projects have been completed for families to enjoy now that COVID-19 restrictions have been relaxed.

Works are now complete on Koolangarra Reserve playground in Bonnet Bay and Henry Lawson Reserve senior and junior playgrounds at Como.

Sutherland Shire Council Mayor Carmelo Pesce advises "we’re on track to achieving our renewal program target to improve the standard of our playgrounds across Sutherland Shire.

Beauford Park playground, Caringbah South, Ascot Place Reserve playground, Miranda, Salmon Haul Bay Reserve playground, Cronulla, Berrima Street Reserve playground, Heathcote and Mansion Point Reserve, Grays Point are all nearing completion.

Mayor Pesce adds "our renewal program is ensuring everyone has access to fun and safe play places that will provide a high level of service to our community into the future.

"Importantly, I want to remind residents and visitors that attendance is strictly limited to ten people at a time and we are asking our community to practice good hand hygiene, maintain physical distancing and stay home if you’re feeling unwell."

The renewal program will have delivered 11 playground renewals by the end of the 2019/20 financial year, with the Turriel Bay Road Reserve Playground renewal in Lilli Pilli unveiled in 2019 and both Woronora Road Reserve, Engadine and Freya Street Reserve Kareela playgrounds still to be completed.

Further to this, there are new and substantially upgraded play spaces now available for the community at Bonna Point Regional Playground, Kurnell, and South Village and Acacia Road community playgrounds in Kirrawee. The upgrade of Dianella Street Reserve playground, Caringbah is nearing completion and construction will also shortly commence on a new local playground at Mathers Place Reserve in Menai.

Council also regularly reviews feedback from residents and undertakes community consultation on a range of play and recreational opportunities, with Mayor Pesce asserting great outcomes have already been achieved across various playground sites throughout Sutherland Shire.

"We had a considerable number of residents contribute their preferences for both the play equipment type and the location of our renewed Mansion Point Reserve Playground in Grays Point through Council’s online engagement platform.

"Caringbah residents were also able to contribute to the design to upgrade the Dianella Street Reserve and playground by attending drop-in sessions and completing an online survey.”
