Works progress on Wagga Wagga’s new multisport cycling complex
April 5, 2021

Work is progressing on Wagga Wagga’s new $9.2 million multisport cycling complex with two key features taking shape at the Pomingalarna site just three months into the construction phase.

Bulk earthworks on the new velodrome and uniquely designed steelwork on the community centre’s roofline provide a significant overview of the size and scale of the project which is on time and on budget for completion at the end of this year.

The Wagga Wagga Multisport Cycling Complex (MSCC), located four kilometres from the Wagga Wagga CBD, will cater for competitive and recreational cyclists and provide the infrastructure and facilities to host regional, state, national and international events.

Planning for the complex took into consideration Wagga Wagga City Council's Active Travel Plan - Cycling (ATP), Wagga Wagga Integrated Transport Strategy 2040 (WWITS) and Recreation, Open Space and Community Strategy and Implementation Plan 2040.

Wagga Wagga's five cycling groups collaborated with Wagga Wagga City Council in considering the future development of cycling facilities and share a common vision to progress cycling in the city.

Wagga Wagga City Council Director Regional Activation Michael Keys said the project demonstrates a strong working relationship with the community to achieve a facility which will be a regional asset.

40% of the project is now complete and the community could look forward to enjoying the benefits of the centre from a sporting, recreational, tourism and economic perspective.

Keys noted “Council has worked closely with stakeholders to make this project a reality.

“40% of the project is now complete and the community could look forward to enjoying the benefits of the centre from a sporting, recreational, tourism and economic perspective.

“From an operational perspective we have worked closely with the cycling groups to ensure we meet standards, but just as important is our cultural commitment to the site and recognising the local significance of Pomingalarna.

“Our consultation with the First Nations Wiradjuri Women’s Group has been a strong and rewarding relationship which has allowed us to design and build a facility which recognises and respects the cultural significance of the site.

“The region can look forward to a top-class facility which will have the capability to host local, state, national and international events, but also cater to recreational cyclists at the mountain bike tracks, and the jump and pump tracks.”

All light towers have been installed. Work on roofing and cladding of the main building will be the next stage before internal fit-out starts. This will be followed by a levelling grader arriving on site to trim the velodrome before the pavement is laid.

The $9.2 million project is jointly funded by a grant from NSW Government’s Regional Sports Infrastructure fund ($7 million) and the City of Wagga Wagga ($2.2 million).
