read moreThe Tasmanian Government has advised it is committed to supporting the State’s sports and recreation sector during these challenging times.
Tasmanian Minister for Sport and Recreation, Jane Howlett notes “we recently announced a $2 million support package to assist the sector to keep Tasmanians employed and to ensure our grassroots sports can survive and resume once is safe to do so.
“Basketball Tasmania was one of the successful organisations to apply for a share of this funding, receiving $150,000 to help support 12 jobs.
Minister Howlett met with Basketball Tasmania Chief Executive, Chris McCoy, to hear firsthand how this funding will help.
McCoy advised “our sport is extremely grateful for the support from the State Government in assisting us through these tough times where there has been zero activity and zero income. Sporting bodies, in varying degrees, have had to cover substantial fixed costs with staffing costs most often a large component.
“Basketball Tasmania is optimistic that we can ‘bounce back’ from these unfortunate times with our staffing team and association structure intact. We will be ready to drive the sport forward on resumption.”
Minister Howlett added “with a number of organisations benefitting from these grants, and with more successful recipients to still be announced, I am confident the State’s sport and recreation sector will recover strongly and I am committed to seeing that process through.”
