read moreThe new URBNSURF surf park - located on a two-hectare site close to Melbourne’s Tullamarine Airport - has secured a three-year strategic partnership with Surfing Victoria, the state’s organising body for surfing, ahead of its January 2020 public opening.
Surfing Victoria conducts a range of age and discipline events, as well as educational programs to coaches, instructors, recreational surfers and competitors.
The partnership will see Surfing Victoria deliver ongoing training to URBNSURF’s coaches and staff, advise on URBNSURF’s Surfing Academy, boardriders club and competitions, deliver high performance training and guidance to Victorian, Australian and international surf athletes, as well as assist with broader education and advocacy.
URBNSURF will also be working closely with Surfing Victoria to support grassroots surfing communities in the state – including providing all Victorian coastal boardriders clubs with the opportunity to host a “club round” competition at the park free of charge.
Adam Robertson, Chief Executive of Surfing Victoria commented “we’re pumped to be in partnership with URBNSURF Melbourne.
“The inclusive nature of what URBNSURF is aiming to achieve with the surf park - to open the sport up to all ages and abilities - complements Surfing Victoria’s purpose of enriching Victorian communities through surfing.”
The partnership was officially announced as part of URBNSURF Melbourne’s first waves being surfed at the park earlier this month. Rising stars of Victorian surfing joined Australian surfing champions and Team Australia members Sally Fitzgibbons and Julian Wilson to experience the ocean-like surfing conditions that will be on offer to the public in Tullamarine come January.
URBNSURF’s founder, Andrew Ross added “we’re stoked to be partnering with Surfing Victoria to deliver high-quality surf lesson and coaching programs at Australia’s first surf park, and to help more talented surfers from Victoria, and around Australia, achieve their dreams of competing on the world stage.
“The team at Surfing Victoria will be invaluable in helping us educate and develop the skills of our staff, coaches and lifeguards, as well as establishing world-class learn to surf programs here in Tullamarine, so that we can equip people of all ages and abilities with the skills to surf more and to surf better.”
Shaped like a baseball diamond, URBNSURF Melbourne’s two-hectare surfing lagoon (similar in size to the MCG) offers both left and right breaks. The innovative sports and leisure venue will be open day and night, year-round, from January 2020.
Guests can choose to surf in beginner, intermediate or advanced one-hour surf sessions, or learn to surf as part of a group or private one hour and 45 minute lesson.
