NIDA in the Territory program continues to upskill creatives with subsidised training

NIDA in the Territory program continues to upskill creatives with subsidised training
November 2, 2023

In its second year, the NIDA in the Territory program will deliver a series of training opportunities from both the screen and arts industries, to help build the talent pool of Territory creatives and increase employment opportunities across the screen and arts sectors.

The world class training program will help build the capacity of Territory screen professionals and artists by offering hands-on workshops facilitated by industry leaders.

Through a new collaboration between Screen Territory, Arts NT and the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) course fees will be heavily subsidised at $85, removing the cost barriers and ensuring everyone can take part.

The week-long course fees without subsidy usually cost approximately $650.

Training will be available to local screen practitioners, theatre and live events staff, performing arts and publicity, promotion workers and people who have transferable skillsets from sectors such as hair and beauty, textiles and fashion.

NT Minister for Industry, Nicole Manison noted “the Territory is a world-class destination for screen production, and as our screen industry grows we need to ensure we’re upskilling local crews and cast ready to work alongside some of the best film and television crews globally.

“This initiative will help bolster the Territory’s capacity to deliver experienced crew to service an ongoing pipeline of screen productions.

“We already know investing in the screen industry has an incredible return on investment and there’s no better investment than education.”

National Institute of Dramatic Art Chief Executive, Liz Hughes added “the return of NIDA's practical skills training across a range of disciplines will continue to provide a pathway for emerging NT creatives.

”There are incredibly talented NIDA alumni who hail from the Northern Territory and we are proud to continue this strategic initiative with Screen Territory and Arts NT to support the development of the creative industries.

“We can’t wait to engage with Northern Territory artists and storytellers through these courses."

More than 140 people participated in the NIDA in the Territory program last year, with some going on to secure employment within the industry.

After great success last year, the program will offer a variety of training opportunities this year including:

  • Directing actors for screen
  • Documentary film making
  • Props making: Digital design and fabrication
  • Acting Technique for Screen
  • Producing for screen
  • Self tapes and screen tests
  • Make up and hair for screen
  • Costume design and realisation for screen

Screen practitioners, theatre and live events staff, performing arts and publicity and promotion workers and people with transferable skillsets are all encouraged to apply.

Travel funding is available through Screen Territory and Arts NT for travel to attend courses for those outside of the Darwin region
