read moreMarvel Stadium will pioneer Amazon's Just Walk Out system during AFL fixtures this weekend, becoming the first venue in the Southern Hemisphere to adopt the payment innovation.
Due to debut at the North Melbourne vs Sydney Swans match this weekend, the technology, dubbed the Runner, will allow fans to get food and beverage within the space of a 45-second goal break.
According to AFL General Manager - Technology/Chief Technology Officer, Rob Pickering “that means getting what you need and getting back to your seat in a goal break of 45 seconds.”
Two of Marvel Stadium’s food and drinks outlets have been fitted with the technology, which it is claimed will ‘revolutionise the food and beverage experience for fans’.
Just Walk Out claimed to reduce queueing by simply tapping payment cards or mobile wallets when entering one of the stores.
It then detects what food and drinks are selected and charges customers when they leave with artificial intelligence used to track the purchases.
The technology is currently in use at sports venues across the US, including TD Garden, home of the Boston Celtics (NBA) and Boston Bruins (NHL), and Climate Pledge Arena, home of the Seattle Kraken (NHL).
Fans buying alcohol will still be required to show their ID to a worker for age verification.
Beyond its introduction at tomorrow afternoon’s clash between North Melbourne and Sydney it will also be rolled out at Perth’s Optus Stadium at a later date.
The project was developed in collaboration with Marvel's food and beverage partner, Delaware North, and technology partner, Telstra.
