read moreTo assist disadvantaged Australian girls who don’t have access to such a basic piece of equipment as the Sports Bra, Women Sport Australia has partnered with The Sports Bra Project to facilitate drives to collect new bras within Australia to provide them to these girls in need.
Women Sport Australia are determined to not let the lack of a sports bra be one of the contributing reasons that by age 14, many girls drop out of sports at two times the rate of boys.
The Sports Bra Project was founded in America, has roots in Africa, and is now in Australia. The Project works to remove barriers to sports participation for women and girls around the world by providing new sports bras to organisations and programs operating in countries and communities where opportunities and access to sport is limited.
Sarah Dwyer-Shick, founder The Sports Bra Project explains “whilst in Africa I took gifts for young soccer players then saw they were being utilised by older players. After realising the Namibian national Women’s soccer team had never owned a sports bra caused me to address a problem I hadn’t realised existed. And this barrier to sport isn’t only in Namibia!”
Women Sport Australia want to first look internally and assist disadvantaged Australians who don’t have access to such a basic piece of equipment.
Gen Dohrmann, President of Women Sport Australia advises “the culture of sport in Australia is that it is part of our DNA, our social connections, family and our general well-being. Working within the industry I feel it is a duty of care to ensure that we are doing all we can to keep our girls in the game and sports they love. Something as necessary as a sports bra should be easily accessible and if it is not something needs to be done about it.”
Madison de Rozario, four-time Paralympian adds “the Sports Bra Project is such a practical way to give support to women and girls who want to participate in sport but can’t always get access to the right gear. We know that physical activity plays a significant role in improving health, building stronger communities and giving people a purpose. Helping to enable this is something I could not be more supportive of!”
The Sports Bra Project will launch in Australia on International Women’s Day – gifting a small piece of sporting equipment that will change lives!
We are asking Australians to donate new Sports Bras with their own personal message to the recipient. And to sports clubs and associations across Australia to use this opportunity to run community-based Sports Bra drives to support our girls across Australia in more ways than one.
Donate, run a drive or be a recipient The Sports Bra Project is about ensuring that girls are supported in Australia. Help our girls enjoy healthier, happier and more productive lives and keep them in the games they love.
