Newly elected Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced his cabinet following his election win last weekend.

In addition to key frontbench positions revealed at the end of last week, Prime Minister Albanese’s announcement confirms many roles transitioning from opposition in government, and that has turned out to be true.

Already known ministry positions were Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong and Katy Gallagher, the new Finance Minister, who were sworn in last week.

Along with the finance portfolio, Gallagher will also hold the women and public service portfolios.

Tanya Plibersek will be the Environment and Water Minister, shifting from her shadow portfolios of education and women - a slot made vacant with shadow spokesperson Terri Butler losing her seat of Griffith.

Labor’s new deputy Senate leader will be Don Farrell, as that spot was also made vacant after the party attempted to move Kristina Keneally to the lower house.

Senator Farrell will also be the Trade and Tourism minister, a role he has held before as well as the Special Minister of State.

Tony Burke will be the leader of the House, as well Minister for the Arts and Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations.

Chris Bowen will hold a new portfolio titled Climate Change and Energy, while Jason Clare is the new Education Minister.

Linda Burney will be the minister for Indigenous Australians, Amanda Rishworth will be the new Social Services Minister and Michelle Rowland will be the new Communications Minister.

Anika Wells will be the Minister for Aged Care and the Minister for Sport, and Kristy McBain the Minister for Industry Development and Territories - both in the outer ministry.

The frontbench makeup is marked by the elevation of several women to senior roles, including Anne Aly who becomes the first Muslim woman to serve in an Australian ministry. Dr Aly takes on a role in the outer ministry as the Minister for Early Childhood Education and Minister for Youth.

Murray Watt will hold the two portfolios of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Emergency Management and Ed Husic enters cabinet as the Minister for Industry and science.

Minister Wells is expected to be appointed onto the Board of the Brisbane 2032 Organising Committee, replacing predecessor Senatot Richard Colbeck.
