read moreThe Town of Port Hedland has approved the allocation of $2,256,108 from its Strategic Reserve to fund the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub’s (JDHYCH) multi-use courts, with the funding to secure the delivery of improved sporting and recreation amenities at the facility.
With the total cost of Stage 2 of the project set to cost $7,546,233, works will include three new multi-use courts, the installation of a shade shelter, an amphitheatre, landscaping and an accessible changing facility.
Port Hedland Mayor Peter Carter welcomed the Council’s decision to allocate funds from the Town’s Strategic Reserve to deliver the JDHYCH’s transformation, advising “the JD Hardie Youth and Community Hub is part of the Town’s record $167 million Hedland Recreation Hubs investment, with Stage 1 works recently completing at the site.
“Council’s decision to allocate funds from the Strategic Reserve provides the Town with the financial security and certainty needed to begin constructing the multi-use courts in 2021.
“The new sports courts will increase the site’s capacity in accommodating an array of activities, from the Town’s popular SLAM basketball series to everyday use by families.
“The courts will be complemented with extensive outdoor shade for sun safety, suitable landscaping for the Pilbara climate and more parking.
“Construction at the site will kick off in January and is expected to be completed by July.
“Allocating funds from the Strategic Reserve is prioritised towards core infrastructure investment which improves Hedland’s liveability.”
Local construction company MJW Building has been awarded the contract for the works.
