Pop-up Globe announces Sydney performance extension
After critical acclaim and unprecedented popular demand, the creators of Pop-up Globe and Live Nation have announced that four additional weeks of performances have been scheduled to play at the temporary Moore Park venue until 2nd December.
Since previews began on 30th August, capacity audiences and critics alike have been raving about Pop-up Globe, with over 50,000 tickets sold already and many performances sold out.
Sydney theatre critics have extolled the experience and each of the four different Shakespeare productions.
Time Out Sydney wrote, "believe us when we say it is an experience" and it is "physical, funny and smashes the fourth wall."
The Sydney Morning Herald reported, "this production may be the best Macbeth I've seen", and of A Midsummer Night's Dream, "this is as rollicking, immersive a production of Shakespeare's most popular comedy as has ever romped across a Modern Stage... This Dream is bawdy, naughty and brash. Fun? You bet your Sweet Ass".
In just two years Pop-up Globe has become one of the most popular new theatres ever, drawing audiences of more than 450,000 people in the first 24 months including more than 150,000 attendances at its critically-acclaimed season in Melbourne earlier this year.
Artistic Director of Pop-up Globe, Miles Gregory, said “we're delighted that Sydney's critics and audiences alike are having such a good time at Pop-up Globe, and we're thrilled to have the opportunity to share our passion and enjoyment with even more people in our extended season.
“Our aim is to bring 400-year-old stories to life in a way that unites our audiences in a joyful and unforgettable night of entertainment. This isn't dusty, highbrow Shakespeare. Our productions bring Shakespeare back to a popular audience, just as it was performed at the original second Globe."
Pop-up Globe is a three-storey, 16-sided, 900-person capacity theatre, uniting cutting-edge scaffold technology with a 400-year-old design to transport audiences back in time.
The world's first full-scale temporary working replica of the second Globe, the theatre Shakespeare and his company built and opened in 1614 after the first Globe theatre burned to the ground, is located in the Show Ring at Sydney's Entertainment Quarter.
For its Sydney season, Pop-up Globe brings with it a festival of four critically-acclaimed productions - magical fantasy A Midsummer Night's Dream, haunting blood-soaked tragedy Macbeth, controversial comedy The Merchant of Venice, and laugh-out-loud slapstick The Comedy of Errors.
Two casts perform the four plays in repertory. The all-male Buckingham's cast perform A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Merchant of Venice, while the Southampton's cast perform Macbeth and The Comedy of Errors.
