read moreSunshine Coast theme park Aussie World’s plans for expansion, that include five new major rides, have been approved by the Sunshine Coast Council.
Set to expand its footprint from its current 6 hectare site, that will also include additional precinct car parking, DownUnder Drive Chief Operating Officer Aaron Flanagan said he was extremely excited that the first steps towards the realisation of the tourist destination’s masterplan was coming to fruition.
Flanagan stated “Council’s decision certainly reinforces our commitment to investing in the Sunshine Coast region and the confidence we have in the local tourism market.
“We pride ourselves on the fact that we have something for everyone at DownUnder Drive, including a growing family theme park, an iconic pub under redevelopment, a burgeoning functions and events venue in The Shed and a quality mix of convenience shopping and specialty retail in the retail village.
“The next exciting stage is about to begin including the addition of a mix of family fun and tier 1 thrill rides which guest expect to see at all major theme parks. These thrill rides will be a first for this region and will be specifically targeting the teen and young adult markets.”
Sunshine Coast Councillor Rick Baberowski said the masterplan approval represented a major milestone for Aussie World and would help with job creation on the Sunshine Coast, adding “once it is completed, the new look Aussie World is sure to be a big hit with visitors to our region and generate a substantial economic boost.
“Tourist attractions also generate new business which in turn offers more enduring employment opportunities for local residents. We expect that the benefits of the expansion will be felt immediately with around 250 new jobs created as a result of the approval.
“It will support the local building and construction industry as well as providing great employment opportunities for locals.
“It’s a great outcome for both Aussie World and our community. At the end of the day our community is the real winner when we expand and attract new investment to our region.”
A considerable amount of re-development has already taken place at DownUnder Drive over the past few years including the addition of six new rides and attractions as well the current multi-million dollar redevelopment of its themed Pub, formerly known as the Ettamogah Pub.
Flanagan concluded “the precinct’s live entertainment venue, The Shed has also undergone a major refurbishment and is earning a solid reputation as one of the leading live entertainment and function venues on the Sunshine Coast. We’ve showcased some exciting local and international talent and watch out for our upcoming events calendar, it’s looking amazing
“There is no sign of things slowing down as summer is set to be jammed packed full of fun with Christmas parties, the Christmas Spectacular on 23rd December, Classic Australian and international music acts in The Shed, and a series of ‘Ride the Night’ events at the Aussie World.”
Over 4 million guests have enjoyed Aussie World theme park since its inception in 1989 and many more millions through the precinct.
