New Queensland Ministerial roles announced in preparation for 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games

New Queensland Ministerial roles announced in preparation for 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games
October 7, 2021

In preparation for hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced new ministerial responsibilities and having reflected on the importance of the project and her role in securing the Games, the Premier will add Minister for the Olympics to her responsibilities.

Premier Palaszczuk said the new ministerial responsibilities are small but necessary next steps as Queensland heads towards its own Games and noted “hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the biggest single transformational project in Queensland’s history.

“New ministerial responsibilities are small but necessary steps towards 2032.”

Changes include:

  • Steven Miles – Deputy Premier, Minister for State Development, Local Government and Planning and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics Infrastructure;
  • Cameron Dick – Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment; and
  • Stirling Hinchliffe – Minister for Tourism, Innovation and Sport and Minister Assisting the Premier on Olympics and Paralympics Sport and Engagement

Although 2032 seems a long way off, the Premier said there is no time to waste advising “Hosting the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games will generate $8 billion in economic and social benefits in addition to 91,600 jobs.

“It is the catalyst for the biggest infrastructure building program our state has ever seen with all levels of government co-operating to deliver them in time for the games, not for them.”

The Premier said legislation that will provide for the organisational body responsible for delivering Games projects is being assessed by Games partners.

It will come before Parliament during the October sittings.
