Works at the rectangular stadium, which will be the first major upgrades since it opened in 2010, will include upgraded LED field lighting, improved video screens, upgraded player, corporate, spectator and broadcast facilities and enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity.
Funded by the Victorian Government, the stadium upgrade works will commence in November and are expected to be finished in February 2023.
The announcement was made alongside the news that the Matildas will host Sweden on Saturday 12th November at AAMI Park, marking the first game for Australia’s women’s national team in Victoria for almost four years.
Victorian Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Steve Dimopoulos commented “we’re excited to welcome the Matildas and Sweden to the nation’s sporting capital and can’t wait to see AAMI Park packed with passionate football fans this November.
“Ahead of hosting six games of the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023, we’re investing in upgrades to AAMI Park so our Matildas and fans will have the best facilities.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia & New Zealand in 2023, will be the biggest women’s sporting event in the world, with AAMI Park to host four group matches and two round-of-16 games.
For the tournament, the venue will revert to its non-commercial name of ‘Melbourne Rectangular Stadium’ as per naming rights guidelines from the world football governing body.
