read moreA joint $5.8 million project between Moreton Bay Regional Council and the Queensland Government has delivered one of the most impressive BMX racing tracks in Australia at Nolan Park, Brendale ahead of the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games.
The State Government $1.95 million contribution was part of the Queensland Government’s Unite and Recover Community Stimulus Package to help Queensland communities bounce back from COVID.
Mayor Peter Flannery who attended the official opening notes “Moreton Bay Regional Council does community sports better than anyone else and that means providing great facilities to all sports whether that’s traditional sports like rugby league, netball and AFL, or emerging sports like BMX racing.
“BMX racing has been rapidly growing in popularity in Australia and specifically Moreton Bay since it was introduced to the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and it continues to be a major drawcard as recently as Tokyo 2020.
“Pine Rivers BMX Club have been at the forefront of that popularity surge by producing a number of junior world champions and providing an outlet for kids to enjoy themselves.
“Now thanks to Council and the State Government they have one of the best racing tracks and clubhouses in Australia to keep churning out the best of the best as we ride closer to the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games right here on our doorstep.”
Pine Rivers MP Nikki Boyd added “thanks to the State Government funding, this facility and clubhouse was able to be delivered to a standard capable of hosting national-level events and competitions which is just another way this facility will continue to provide ongoing stimulus to the local community.”
Councillor Cath Tonks (Div 9) said this was just another feather in the cap for the Brendale area, which is fast becoming the centre of community sports in South East Queensland.
“The proof is in the pudding and a record 217 riders at the official opening of this new BMX track shows that it’s already a facility that the community loves,” she said.
“It complements the work we’ve been doing down the road to build one of Queensland’s largest multisport facilities at the South Pine Sports Complex, which is home to roughly 6,000 sports club members playing over 20 different sports.
“This new BMX track provides the community a point of difference and another options for locals to take part in sport and connect with others at the Pine Rivers BMX Club.
“What a thrill it would be to see one of these riders go on to compete for Australia at the 2032 Olympic & Paralympic Games in Brisbane.”
