Supporting Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’s return to the Melbourne stage, Producers Sonia Friedman and Colin Callender, released a statement advising “since our premiere in 2019 the continued support for the Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child has been overwhelming. Our committed audiences have often had to rebook multiple times and we thank them for their continued support for the show.
“As we prepare our return to the stage, we also want to thank our cast and crew, who have weathered the past few months. We can’t wait to be all back in a theatre together, sharing stories, making memories and most all, creating magic for the audiences in Melbourne."
The Australian production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child premiered with a red-carpet gala in February 2019 and saw a record-breaking first year of performances, surpassing any previous record set by a stage play in the history of Australian theatre. An estimated 326,500 people experienced the magic at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre in its first year of performances, with over 50% of audiences travelling from inter or outer state.
Melbourne’s Princess Theatre underwent a $6.5 million transformation to accommodate the incredibly complex set for the immersive and magical play and will unequivocally not play in any other Australian city.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is the eighth story in the Harry Potter canon and the first Harry Potter story to be presented on stage. The play holds a record 60 major honours, with nine Laurence Olivier Awards including Best New Play and six Tony Awards® including Best New Play and has been seen by over 2 million people worldwide.
Based on an original new story by J.K. Rowling, Jack Thorne and John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play by Jack Thorne, directed by John Tiffany.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, Colin Callender and Harry Potter Theatrical Productions.
Michael Cassel is Executive Producer of the Australian production.
