Cockburn ARC waterslide closed due to air quality concerns

Cockburn ARC waterslide closed due to air quality concerns
February 8, 2018

A popular waterslide at the recently opened Cockburn Aquatic and Recreation Centre (ARC) in southern metropolitan Perth has been temporarily closed due to air quality concerns.

The Tumbler slide has been closed following complaints of poor air quality inside the bowl due to the effect of increased ambient temperatures on chlorinated pool water.

Cockburn ARC Manager Brett McEwin explained “issues with ventilation in the Tumbler became apparent in late December as a direct result of increased ambient temperatures associated with the hotter summer months.

“The decision to close the slide temporarily while we modify the bowl (was) made in the interests of safety for the general public using the slide.

“We aim to reopen the slide as soon as possible because it is one of our patrons’ most loved experiences at the ARC.”

Following consultation with the design team, the lid enclosing the slide’s bowl will be removed to improve air flow and address the issue.

McEwin said work would include external modifications to the slide to improve air quality, safety and comfort, plus rider experience when entering the slide’s bowl, adding “we believe having the open air experience will add an exciting element to the ride.

Since opening in May last year, the $109 million facility has attracted more then 450, 000 people.

During the summer period, more than 80,000 patrons with a record 3, 513 people coming through the turnstiles on 9th January.

The Tumbler waterslide is expected to reopen in the coming weeks.
