Bangarra relocates to temporary Barangaroo home

Bangarra relocates to temporary Barangaroo home
August 2, 2017

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance company Bangarra are the latest company to depart from Sydney's Walsh Bay as the precinct prepares for major redevelopment.

Announcing the company’s relocation from their current premises at Pier 4/5, Bangarra’s Executive Director, Philippe Magid, said the company has secured a temporary new home in International Towers at Barangaroo.

Magid stated “this is a great partnership between the private sector and the arts.

“(We undertook) an extensive search and we are extremely thankful to the NSW Government and International Towers for their generosity and flexibility.

“As a world-class dance company, we require a very specific space and International Towers have made innovative use of a vacant area within Tower Three to ensure we are properly accommodated during this interim period.”

The space includes a dance studio for rehearsals and offices for the administration team.

Magid added “we are also thrilled to be operating from the Barangaroo precinct, so rich with Indigenous history.”

NSW Minister for the Arts Don Harwin explained “the move will allow Bangarra to continue to stage its premier dance performances during the redevelopment of the Walsh Bay Arts Precinct (and) I look forward to welcoming them back to their new permanent home in what will be a revitalised and world-class arts and cultural space.”

The $210 million redevelopment of the Walsh Bay arts precinct is due to open in 2019.

Walsh Bay residents Sydney Theatre Company (STC) and Australian Theatre for Young People (ATYP) have already announced their relocation plans.

STC will stage its works in the Roslyn Packer Theatre and the Sydney Opera House's Drama Theatre - and a smaller venue yet to be announced - during the redevelopment, while the company’s administration will operate out of temporary offices at the Fox Studios lot in Moore Park.

ATYP, meanwhile, will stage its 2018 season at Griffin Theatre’s Darlinghurst base, the Stables Theatre. ATYP’s residency means Griffin's usual Independent season will not be staged next year.

Bangarra has been based at Pier 4/5 at Walsh Bay since 1997, and the premises have been refitted numerous times to accommodate burgeoning staff and production needs.
