Aquatics, culture and sport feature in Northern Territory Government’s project plans for Alice Springs
November 4, 2024

The Northern Territory Government has today released its project plans for Alice Springs which prioritise children and community well-being through improved aquatic, cultural and sporting infrastructure.

Aquatic and sporting project plans include:

  • $1.8 million for a new regional Skate and Play Precinct at Newland Park with funding contributions from ASTC and $4 million from the Australian Government;
  • $450,000 for free pool access at the Alice Springs Aquatic & Leisure Centre during summer holidays, Saturday afternoons and all-day Sunday;
  • Reinstatement of ANZAC Oval to enhance recreational opportunities;
  • Development of new sporting facilities in Gillen, including upgrades at Jim McConville Oval, from reprioritised funding to support active lifestyles and community engagement.

Cultural project plans include:

  • $14.96 million towards the ASTC’s $5 million contribution to construct a new Alice Springs Town Council Library, expanding public services and enriching community spaces; and
  • $5 million to establish a new Multicultural Centre to celebrate and support Alice Springs’ diverse cultural landscape.
  • $4.8 million towards a new Tourism Central Australia Headquarters and Visitor Information Centre to help strengthen local tourism; and
  • Deliver the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Gallery within the allocated budget.

NT Minister for Lands, Planning and Environment Josh Burgoyne advised “we are taking decisive action to enhance the quality of life for all residents in Alice Springs. By creating vibrant spaces where our community can thrive, we are building a safer, more inclusive place for everyone to enjoy.”

Alice Springs Mayor Matt Paterson added “Improving liveability for residents of Alice Springs is council’s number one priority.

“We’re thrilled to work with the Northern Territory Government to build infrastructure that will have a positive impact on residents for generations to come.

“The diversity of our community is one of the things I love most about Alice Springs, and that is further strengthened with this announcement. Along with the boost to tourism, this is a really exciting day for our community."
