read moreThe Northern Territory Department of Tourism and Hospitality has released refreshed Destination Management Plans (DMP) for the Lasseter, Barkly and Big Rivers regions highlighting the strengths, opportunities, and current product offerings from three of the Territory key tourism regions.
The DMPs are a crucial step in ensuring the plans remain relevant in the evolving tourism landscape, identifying key opportunities and celebrating achievements from previous years.
The DMPs are reviewed every three years to keep pace with evolving visitor demand and ensure the continued development of a sustainable tourism sector across the regions.
The Big Rivers and Barkly Regions make up a significant portion of the Territory and includes vast rivers, tropical woodlands and savannah plains. Both regions offer unique and rich tourism experiences built around natural environments, recreational activities, history and heritage and Aboriginal culture.
The Lasseter Region, located south of Alice Springs includes the World Heritage listed Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park and Watarrka National Park. Visitors to the region are treated to iconic landscapes, Aboriginal culture adventure and history.
A roadmap for future tourism development and investment, each DMP has actions identified to activate opportunities, address gaps and priorities product development while encouraging the development of a sustainable tourism sector.
Some of the key achievements across the three regions include securing $13 million from the Australian Government to upgrade enabling water infrastructure in Yulara, progress on upgrades to the Battery Hill visitor centre and mine tunnel and completion of upgrades to the Katherine Visitor information Centre and RV Service Centre.
Development opportunities identified for each region include sealing the Mereenie Loop with construction to start in 2025, enhancing quality accommodation offerings in Tennant Creek and revitalisation of Katherine’s CBD.
