Work recommences on redevelopment at Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre

Work recommences on redevelopment at Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre
July 11, 2019

Hume City Council says work on the Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre will finish on schedule and within budget despite head contractor, Xerri Group, having recently going into liquidation.

Work had stopped for several weeks but has now resumed, after the Council retained some of the sub-contractors already working on the project.

Hume Council Corporate Services Director Daryl Whitfort said when the contract was approved in March, its tendering process confirmed Xerri Group was “financially-sound and a best-fit for the job”.

Now, with Xerri Group in liquidation, Whitfort advised “Council … (will) ensure that the upgrades to the Broadmeadows Aquatic and Leisure Centre are completed and delivered in a timely manner while working to minimise any financial implications or project delays.”

The $2.49 million upgrade to the centre is due to finish in September.

Work includes resurfacing of the 25 metre pool concourse, removal of the mezzanine balcony as well as replacement and repair of the 25 metre pool hall roof.

A pop-up gym will be installed as the gym floor will be unavailable for about six weeks.

This is not the first time the Council has been impacted by an issue with a contractor.

Work on a $13 million redevelopment of Broadmeadows Leisure Centre was delayed for more than two years after Walton Construction, contracted to construct the 50 million pool, went into insolvency in 2013.
