Western Australian Government grants look to promote sport participation

Western Australian Government grants look to promote sport participation
October 1, 2019

The Western Australian Government has launched the latest round of the Targeted Participation Program (TPP) to encourage low-participation groups to share in the benefits of community sport and recreation.

The grants look to target the range of demographic groups which typically have lower participation rates in sport and recreation - including disengaged youth, Aboriginal people, teenage girls, people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, people with a disability, and those over 60.

The TPP provides funding to sport and recreation projects which aim to engage these demographics - helping to share the many health, social and community-building benefits grassroots sport provides.

The program is an initiative led jointly by Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray and Western Australian Health Minister Roger Cook.

Commenting on the program, Minister Murray stated “grassroots sport delivers so many benefits beyond the playing field and we want to make sure everyone is encouraged to get involved.

"Some groups for various reasons are less likely to join a club and these grants are available to help reverse that trend. Diversity in participation is good for clubs and good for the wider community.

"I encourage sporting associations and other eligible groups to investigate how the TPP might be able to assist with a project or initiative."

The TPP is now open for applications, with grants of $50,000 to $150,000 available.

Applications close on 14th October 2019.
