The Art of Creating Great Cities and Places

The Art of Creating Great Cities and Places
October 1, 2010

Melbourne's Federation Square is to host a major conference on the creation and delivery of our future cities and communities.

To be held from 27th to 29th October, the conference aims to pose a series of questions on how cities and communities are developed in a way that maintains and enhances liveability?

Themes such as sustainability and population growth, and sectoral interests in design, economics, development, environment and social outcomes will be synthesised to test and develop new models for sustainable urban development.

Delegates will be asked to contribute to and shape the outcomes; to share experiences to build on the work to date to refine these models, and to document what has been learned to influence ongoing market practice.

The conference will hear from those who are blazing the trail for a more integrated model of urban development; Carol Coletta, US moderator of the debate on successful cities; Christopher Leinberger, a developer of sustainable and profitable urbanism; the often quoted James Kunstler âThe future will require us to build better places or the future will belong to people in other societiesâ; and Neil McInroy , Chief Executive of the UK Centre for Local Economic Strategies.

The conference is presented by VicUrban in partnership with the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development, the City of Melbourne, Village Well and Federation Square.

The significance of Federation Square as public place was a feature in the July/August 2010 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
