Tennis Australia to manage Hopman Cup from 2013

Tennis Australia to manage Hopman Cup from 2013
April 8, 2012

In an adrupt change of direction, the International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that Tennis Australia will manage the Hopman Cup tennis tournament as of next year.

Only last week, the ITF last week ended almost a year-long battle over the management rights of the event when it announced it would take on the job itself, managing the event until the end of the current contract with Tourism WA in 2014, at which point Tennis Australia's involvement would increase.

However, in a statement released on Friday, the ITF announced it had "signed an agreement with Tennis Australia under which Tennis Australia will be contracted to provide certain services to Hopman Cup for the 2013 and 2014 events."

Under the agreement Tennis Australia has been contracted to provide both a tournament director and an operations director and to also procure players.

In addition the ITF announced that the Hopman Cup will be "returned to the Australian Open Series ahead of the 2013 event".

Tennis Australia had previously dropped the event from the Australian Open Series as leverage to step into crucial roles for the Hopman Cup from the tournament's next instalment.

During the management rights battle, Tournament Director and Hopman Cup co-founder Paul McNamee raised the spectre of Tennis Australia downgrading the event if they were involved in its management.

While McNamee provided no proof to back up his assertion, media organisations and politicians in Western Australia slavishly backed and promoted his claims.

The popular event is seen as an anchor event for the new $550 million Perth Arena - where it will relocate next year from the Burswood Dome.
