read moreThe Tasmanian Government has commenced the process of engaging with councils in the greater Hobart area as part of its plan to deliver a new High Performance Centre for the state’s new AFL and AFLW teams.
Advising that the Tasmanian Department of State Growth will join with councils in undertaking community consultations in the coming months, Tasmanian Minister for Stadia and Events, Nic Street advised “no matter where this facility is built, it will be an important community asset that will fill Tasmanians with pride.
“The (Tasmanian) Government recognises that selecting a site for the team’s training and administration facility is about more than just the technical merits of the land on which it will be built.
“It is about the surrounding community and the level of support that such a facility would have at any chosen location.
“As such, we are seeking to undertake a process to select a site that includes working collaboratively with councils to explore site options chosen by them.
“Rather than knocking on the doors of councils with preconceived ideas of where the centre may go, we want to work with a willing local government that wants to be the home of Tasmania’s AFL and AFLW club.
“We acknowledge that councils will need to carefully plan and implement appropriate stakeholder and community consultation when identifying and evaluating potential sites on public land, including assessing potential impacts on existing users.
“We will take all that detail into consideration when the final site is determined.”
