Talaroo Hot Springs attraction opens in Outback Queensland
Talaroo Hot Springs, a new tourist attraction, has been opened in the heart of the Gulf Region of Queensland on the Savannah Way.
Located about four and a half hours' drive from Cairns, Talaroo Hot Springs is home to geothermal waters, rich Ewamian culture, and native flora and fauna in one of Queensland’s most globally significant natural landscapes.
The 65 million-year-old site sits within a remote 31,500-hectare former cattle station on the Einasleigh River and are the only tiered thermal hot springs in Australia.
Open since the end of last month, the attraction includes camping and caravan sites, a swimming pool, camp-ground amenities, picnic shelters and a café at the thermal springs.
A tour through the hot springs, private soaking pools and yarning circles are among Talaroo’s activities, with camping sites also available.
Visitors can also take a self-guided walk to spot over 200 bird species, as well as wallabies, wallaroos, frogs and turtles.
Pools within the hot springs can attain a surface water temperature in of up to 68°C while the cooler pools and outflow streams have long been treasured by Traditional Owners, the Ewamian people, as healing waters for the body and soul.
Ewamian Elder and cultural advisor for Talaroo’s tours and experiences, Jimmy 'JR' Richards, says opening Talaroo as a tourist destination is a dream long held by its Traditional Owners, advising “from the plants we’ve used for thousands of years to the history and culture of our people and to the future we’re building right here.
“It’s an incredible evolving journey that mirrors the constantly changing Springs at the heart of our land.”
Development of the attraction followed the property having been purchased on behalf of Ewamian people in 2012 through the National Reserve System and its subsequent management by Ewamian Rangers as an Indigenous Protected Area and Nature Refuge.
The development was funded through the Queensland Government’s Growing Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
