Shark Bay to receive multi-function recreation and emergency evacuation shelter

Shark Bay to receive multi-function recreation and emergency evacuation shelter
June 17, 2011

Shark Bay residents can look forward to the construction of a multi-function community, sport and recreation centre, after receiving $4.15 million from the Western Australian Government's Royalties for Regions funding.

The $5.1 million project, which has also received funding of $950,000 from the Shire of Shark Bay, will deliver a number of benefits to the community.

Western Australian Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said in addition to facilitating sport and recreational activities and events, the centre will offer a separate gymnasium, meeting rooms and a performing arts centre.

Minister Gryllis explained "the design, location and elevation of the building will allow the centre to serve also as an emergency evacuation shelter for up to 500 people during extreme climatic events - the building has been designed and will be constructed to the appropriate cyclonic region rating.

"This centre is much-needed by the community as well as by visitors to Shark Bay, many of whom stay for extended periods of up to six months.

"The centre will encourage regular physical activity and social interaction, providing a place for community gatherings, meetings, events and training.

"Community groups in the Shark Bay area currently suffer from a lack of suitable premises for activities. The organisation of meetings and events - important for developing business and tourism in the area - is very difficult without access to appropriate all-weather facilities."

Community consultation initiated by the Shire of Shark Bay has identified a range of sports and community activities that would be enhanced by the provision of the centre.
