Queenslanders with exciting ideas to improve the health and wellbeing of children and young people can apply for a share of funding to bring their projects to life.
Two-thirds of adults and one in four children are living with overweight or obesity in Queensland, which impacts on individuals and families and costs the state’s health system an estimated $756 million per year.
QLD Health Minister Yvette D’Ath advises “these grants call for innovative ideas that will drive generational change and empower young Queenslanders to live healthier and more active lives.
“We know that making early steps to encourage healthy eating and an active lifestyle to young people ensures that they are well set up for the future.
“By ensuring kids are supported to make healthy choices at an early age, it means that they can avoid health challenges related to obesity later in life.
“This keeps them out of our health system if we can reduce the chance of them and keep them out of our health system by reducing the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes, and cancers.”
Chief Executive, Health and Wellbeing Queensland Dr Robyn Littlewood adds “getting in early and supporting children and their families to get healthy in their communities is critical.
“We need bold new ideas to protect the health of Queensland’s next generation.
“These grants will help make healthy happen faster for our state by driving innovation across key areas that have a huge impact on our health and wellbeing and most importantly by supporting communities bring the ideas to life that will be most beneficial – because they know their own communities better than anyone.”
