New Board working towards sustainable future for alpine resorts

New Board working towards sustainable future for alpine resorts
February 24, 2016

The newly established Alpine Resort Management Boards of Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw is to work with a Victorian Government created reference group and engage with the resorts’ stakeholders as it develops its recommendations to the government on what can make the resorts sustainable in the future, a future in which the respective alpine areas’ environments are likely to be impacted by the effects of climate change.

The Chair of the newly appointed Boards, Allan Bawden said that addressing the long-term sustainability of the resorts would be a key priority for the Board, as it works with government to merge the governance and management of the two alpine resort management boards.

Bawden explained “having come together last month in our first Board meeting since our appointment, we are enthusiastic and prepared to lead the process to determine the future.

“Our brief and purpose is clear, that is, to plan for the viability and continued growth of both resorts.

“While we certainly have an eye on the short term opportunities and challenges, we are taking a long term view of both resorts, particularly as the likely impact of climate change is to be addressed.

“The recommendations will ensure that the economic and social benefits that flow from the resorts to the surrounding regional communities are maximised.”

The Boards have also announced the appointment of Philip Nunn as the interim Chief Executive of both the Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw Resort Management Boards.

Commenting on the appointment, Bawden added “we are excited to have engaged Phil as interim CEO.

“He has extensive alpine and tourism experience, and starts with strong firsthand knowledge of what is required to deliver success.

“Given we will spend some time developing our strategic plan, the Board and Phil felt it was appropriate that the role be on an interim basis until such a time that the required skillsets and organisational structure were determined.

“We look forward to engaging with resort stakeholders after visiting the resorts in February and working together with them and Phil to secure the resorts’ sustainability so that we can ensure that Mount Baw Baw and Lake Mountain can be enjoyed by generations to come.”

Nunn was appointed Chief Executive of Lake Mountain in August 2015 having undertaken previous senior executive roles at the Mount Buller and Mount Stirling Alpine Resorts and the Geelong Football Club.

Commenting on his new role, Nunn stated “I am looking forward to engaging with the people that matter most to the longevity of Lake Mountain and Mount Baw Baw - those who share a common interest in the resorts’ ongoing success and sustainability.

“Our stakeholders know the resorts extremely well, and it’s a priority for us to get a strong understanding of what is important to them and what their concerns are, and what opportunities they see for the future.

“It is an exciting time to be taking on the role.

While there are some key strategic challenges to be tackled, the potential for upside is enormous given the proximity of both mountains to Melbourne.”

The changing history of the Victorian Government’s management of its alpine resorts is a feature in the January/February 2016 issue of Australasian Leisure Management.
