Maroubra Beach to be transformed with revitalised public space

Maroubra Beach to be transformed with revitalised public space
August 7, 2023

Randwick City Council has commenced construction at Maroubra Beach in Sydney's East, to transform a temporary public space into a new plaza providing a permanent recreation space.

A section of McKeon Street was closed to cars in October 2022 to trial a temporary public space, supporting nearby businesses and activated with programmed activities such as farmer markets, live music and outdoor movie screenings.

Randwick Mayor Dylan Parker explained “we received overwhelming positive feedback throughout the trial and I’m very pleased we are now making the McKeon Street Plaza permanent, creating more space for people to gather, walk and play.

“A permanent plaza in the heart of Maroubra Beach will be a welcoming space with new seating, shade and greenery, encouraging the community to spend more time down at the beach socialising and supporting the local businesses.”

The new and improved design of the permanent plaza has been developed in response to community feedback, encompassing their vision for the space.

Community consultation found 85% of respondents supported making the plaza permanent and expressed a desire for a revitalised public space that fosters a strong sense of community, encourages active lifestyles, and preserves the unique coastal character of Maroubra.

The permanent plaza includes a new stage for future activations, more shade and all-weather cover, seating areas, greenery and planter boxes filled with indigenous flora native to the coast. There is also a community garden and a unique art seat, providing a functional plaza for socialising and relaxing.

The construction of the permanent McKeon Street Plaza is expected to be completed by the end of September 2023. Access will be retained to local businesses throughout the construction period and locals are encouraged to keep shopping and visiting their favourite local cafes and businesses.
