The WA Government allocated the funding towards the Shire of Donnybrook-Balingup's project in 2020, which has an estimated total cost of $9 million.
The Shire initially received $250,000, to be used towards planning, project management and design. With the contract now awarded to Perkins Builders, the agreement has been signed to commit the remaining contribution of $5.75 million towards the construction works.
The redevelopment includes the co-location of sport and recreation clubs into one multipurpose facility accommodating year-round sport, recreation and community activity.
The facility will cater to a wide range of sports including football, tennis, netball, hockey and basketball.
WA Sport and Recreation Minister David Templeman notes "Donnybrook-Balingup has a strong sporting tradition and this significant investment from the McGowan Government will not only provide upgraded amenities for sports but will also offer shared-use community facilities in the VC Mitchell Park precinct.
"This redevelopment project will create a pipeline of local jobs, with local small businesses and contractors to benefit during the construction phase.
"Sport, recreation and community activities help to deliver important social, health and economic benefits to local communities, and I look forward to seeing this project come to fruition."
