read moreThe City of Karratha has announced that its Karratha Leisureplex aquatic and recreation facility is to be funded with $150,000 of improvements that will deliver additional shading and court enclosures while also backing a master plan for further upgrades.
As reported by the Pilbara News, the Council has appointed Perth-based firm Peter Hunt Architect as the preferred tenderer to deliver the design options.
A Council spokesperson said the proposed upgrades included enclosing two of the six outdoor courts, as well as shade options to cater for afternoon sun affecting play on courts three, four, five and six.
The spokesperson advised “regular refurbishments to the Karratha Leisureplex enhance patrons’ experience at the facility.
“Peter Hunt Architect originally designed the Karratha Leisureplex and were appointed following a competitive tender process.”
The initial stage of the contracts will see the practice development a master plan for the facility to include various upgrade options and concept designs for further upgrades including a water slide, pool shading and seating, gym expansion and equipment upgrades.
The Council has allocated a further $400,000 from its long-term financial plan for the construction of major upgrades to the facility, which are set to be delivered in stages over the next five years.
Since opening in 2013, the $63.7 million Karratha Leisureplex has attracted more than 3.5 million visitors.
