Disability grants continue to support Northern Territory inclusive events

To mark International Day of People with Disability - a globally recognised initiative held annually on 3rd December - 14 grants worth almost $50,000 are being delivered across the Northern Territory to support community organisations deliver events that promote accessibility and inclusion.

The funded events and activities aim to enhance awareness, understanding and acceptance of individuals with disability.

The Territory Government funded events include an awards ceremony recognising disability community achievements run by Katherine Town Council, an IDPwD disco in Alice Springs organised by Disability Advocacy Service, activities organised by Nadscare Pty Ltd at the Tennant Creek Youth Centre and Clubhouse Territory’s All Abilities Social Basketball Challenge in Palmerston.

Other successful applicants for grant funding were:

  • The City of Palmerston for diverse activities celebrating IDPwD in Palmerston;
  • NT Industry Training Bureau (YouthWorX NT) for the Cafe-for-a-Day event in Berrimah, featuring young participants from the Encompass NDIS support program;
  • Alice Springs Town Council for IDPwD Mayoral Awards and Day of Fun;
  • Palmerston College Council Inc for Everyone Belongs, a week-long celebration with guest speaker Robyne Burridge;
  • Northern Territory Chamber of Commerce and Industry for Dine with Dinesh, raising awareness among local employers to become disability confident;
  • Integrated Disability Action for Carnival of Fun MC Training;
  • Henbury School Council for the 2023 Henbury Corporate Luncheon;
  • HPA Incorporated to organise an Open Day showcasing employment and pathway activities;
  • Inclusion Australia Ltd for Celebrate Yourself, led by people with intellectual disability to build awareness and celebrate diversity; and
  • Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) Top End Inc for the RDA Top End End-of-Year and IDPwD Celebration.

Territory Minister for Disabilities, Ngaree Ah Kit noted  “Our Government is proud to have invested in a range of activities that foster inclusion and embody our commitment to inclusive communities where people with disability are valued, respected and can make valuable contributions.  We thank the organisers for their efforts.

“The funded activities have included events that provide valuable real-life employment experience for people with disability and that encourage mainstream employers to provide opportunities for employment to people with disability.

“The grants have also supported a range of fun events encouraging the coming together of people of all abilities and to celebrate the achievements of those who help to make the Northern Territory inclusive and accessible.”
