Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park releases new video of construction progress

Hong Kong’s Kai Tak Sports Park releases new video of construction progress
August 10, 2023

The Kai Tak Sports Park team has provided an update on development progress, releasing new aerial footage capturing the current state of the landmark venue and precinct on the edge of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour.

The drone footage offers panoramic views of the construction in the early morning, afternoon and evening, allowing viewers to observe the flow of activities across the expanding park facilities.

In early July, the venue reached a significant milestone with the delivery of the final shipment of its retractable roof steel structure, described as “a pivotal stage in the building of the main stadium”. The specific design of the retractable roof enables the main stadium to host a range of sport, cultural and entertainment events in all weather conditions with the heavy steel structural roof including stringent acoustic specification, making it one of the most effective sound insulated sports facilities in the world.

The entire roof comprises 15,000 tonnes of structural steel with a main truss span of 180 metres including over 4,800 tonnes of retractable roofing on east and west sides.

As the largest sports infrastructure project ever undertaken in Hong Kong, Kai Tak Sports Park has adopted advanced construction methods and innovative technologies throughout the design and construction process.

Part of the redevelopment on the site of the old Hong Kong International Airport at Kai Tak, the 28-hectare sports park features a 50,000 seat main stadium, an indoor sports centre with the flexibility to host community sports and events of up to 10,000 seats and a public sports ground with a capacity of 5,000 seats. These venues will be complemented with extensive public open spaces for events and leisure together with retail and harbourfront dining spaces.

The major facilities within the precinct are expected to be completed in phases by the end of 2024.
