ASM Global announce general manager - commercial appointment for Hong Kong Kai Tak Sports Park project
March 2, 2021

ASM Global has announced the appointment of experienced venue professional James Irvine as General Manager - Commercial for Hong Kong's Kai Tak Sports Park development.

Taking on his new role in January, Irvine is leading the commercial sales and operations for the 28 hectare precinct. Targeted for completion in 2023, the project comprises of a 50,000 capacity stadium, 10,000 seat arena, 5,000-seat public sports ground, about 60,000m² of retail space, and public open spaces.

With more than 20 years commercial experience, Irvine is responsible for all commercial activity across the landmark project that will include the procurement of domestic and international sports and entertainment events, sale of corporate suites, sponsorships and ticketing. Along with the wider operations team working on the project, Irvine will work closely with Sportfive who are providing commercial rights, hospitality and sports procurement services.

Irvine most recently worked as Director of ASM Global Partnerships based in Sydney with oversight of sales and commercial activities across the company’s venues in Australia, a position he had held since 2011.

Prior to that he was the Head of Travel and Hospitality Sales in New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup.

Commenting on his new challenge, Irvine advised “Kai Tak Sports Park gives Hong Kong something to be immensely proud of and I am genuinely excited to join the team.

“This is one of the most exciting sport, leisure, and entertainment infrastructure projects underway in the world at the moment. The facilities translate to something Hong Kong has never seen before - a wide range of community fitness activities year-round through to international sports events, live entertainment and a 28 hectare site of engaging precinct activation.”

Until December 2010, Irvine spent almost 10 years with leading international sports, entertainment and media company, IMG.

First starting as Sales Executive within the UK Sales Group division Irvine sold commercial rights for IMG clients that included the International Rugby Board, Welsh Rugby Union, Wembley Stadium, London’s O2 Arena and tennis legend Roger Federer.

Kai Tak Sports Park Executive Director, Darren Burden noted “I’m absolutely delighted that James has joined the team. The next couple of years will be incredibly fast paced and, with his wealth of experience, he is a most welcome addition as we continue to build our capabilities at Kai Tak Sports Park.”

The overall project is being delivered and operated by Kai Tak Sports Park Limited - a subsidiary of New World Development Company Limited and NWS Holdings Limited. ASM Global has been engaged by Kai Tak Sports Park Limited as the Operator of the Precinct. KTSPL’s project team comprises overseas and local experts experienced in design, construction, venue management, sales and marketing, and retail and operation.
