Announcing the start of a new jobs campaign for the Games, Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said with less than two years to go until the Commonwealth Games there were job opportunities for Queenslanders in a range of different roles and fields working in the team to deliver GC2018.
Premier Palaszczuk stated “the Games team will need to recruit an extra 1000 people to fill new jobs to deliver what we believe will be the most memorable Commonwealth Games.
“This is a once in a generation opportunity and there are many jobs on offer now and in the future for people from all walks of life to join the Games team.”
Premier Palaszczuk said the Games were expected to support up to 30,000 full time equivalent jobs and generate more than $2 billion in economic impact.
Commonwealth Games Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the roles in areas including finance, transport, administration, sport and technology would feature alongside opportunities in venue planning, Queen’s Baton Relay, accommodation and procurement.
Minister Hinchliffe added “the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC) will be looking for ‘champions’ off the field that want to showcase their skills on the global stage and mix it with event professionals from around the world to deliver the Games.
“Over the next two years there will be new jobs created for a range of roles including security, logistics, customer service, IT services, graphic design, medical support staff and many more positions.
“Queensland job seekers and people looking for a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of the team that delivers the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games are encouraged to apply.
“With this jobs drive, more Queensland will gain skills in diverse areas of major event operations which will be a great legacy for the state and help Queensland attracts more and more great events.”
Incoming GOLDOC Chair Peter Beattie said the Commonwealth Games presented a very unique chance for Queenslanders to experience working within a truly global organisation.
The former Queensland Premier concluded “people don’t need to have prior Games or major events experience, they just need to be positive and passionate about being part of a team to help deliver something very special.”
GOLDOC currently employs 267 personnel and is on a rapid trajectory to see 460 on board by the end of the year.
GOLDOC are looking for staff across a number of teams including: Games Operations and Games Services, Transport, Security, Venue Development and Overlay, Marketing & Communications, Licensing & Merchandising, Sponsorship, City Operations, Risk Management, Sustainability and Legacy, Finance, Human Resources, Technology, Procurement.
