Gallery designs unveiled as early works start on next stages of HOTA

Gallery designs unveiled as early works start on next stages of HOTA
July 19, 2018

Concept designs for the Gold Coast’s $60.5 million art gallery at HOTA, Home of the Arts, have been unveiled as preparations commence works for works on the next phase of the arts and entertainment precinct.

Gold Coast City Council endorsed the drawings at committee today and agreed the new gallery would broaden the city’s cultural offerings.

Council will decide on the final concepts at full Council on 31st July 2018.

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said the city delivered on the Stage 1a HOTA outdoor stage and concert lawn ahead of schedule and under budget and was now ready to build the next stage of a city gallery including a green bridge to Chevron Island.

He advised “Evandale will be a busy site with $80 million of infrastructure to be delivered over the next two years, keeping the city way ahead post GC2018 through generating jobs in construction and the arts and continuing our long term cultural legacy.

“Site fencing will go up in September signalling the start of early works with a carpark west of the Civic Chambers building and reconfiguration of existing carparks to make way for the gallery footprint. Importantly, there will be no net loss of public open space compared to when we started the project.

“Major construction commencement will begin in March 2019.”

Hansen Yuncken, the highly regarded practive that managed the technically-challenging Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in Hobart, has been brought on board to commence early works for the art gallery.

Tracy Cooper-Lavery, Director of the HOTA Gallery, added “(the) HOTA Gallery will provide unprecedented access to the City’s multi-million-dollar art collection and a range of exhibitions from local to international; many of which can only be seen on the Gold Coast.”

Mayor Tate said he was delighted to unveil the updated concept designs which highlighted the continued use of the voronoi shape and revealed a colour scheme with three-dimensional effect to the façade and complemented the HOTA Outdoor Stage, concluding “this is a beautiful, durable and functional design, offering a breathtaking rooftop experience, which will ensure the gallery becomes a cultural beacon and must see destination for residents and visitors to engage with art and design on a local to global scale.

“It also complements the HOTA Outdoor Stage which is fast becoming a venue of choice for leading national and international performers.”

The green bridge design also adopts principles of the voronoi and will provide an arrival experience into the precinct with informal seating, an area for a pop-up food cart or performance and capturing views of the Surfers Paradise skyline and landscape.

Practical Completion of the gallery is scheduled for late 2020 with official opening in early 2021.
