Former AFL player joins City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to promote indigenous wellbeing

Former AFL player joins City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder to promote indigenous wellbeing
December 21, 2021

Former AFL player for the Collingwood Magpies and the West Coast Eagles - Bradley Dick - has joined the team at the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder aiming to promote Indigenous wellness and health education in the City and in the surrounding remote communities.

Dick is adopting a hands-on role and will be working with the Safer Streets Patrol, BEGA Garnbirringu and remote communities helping to educate and inspire young Indigenous people.

When asked what brought him to his new line of work, Dick shared “throughout my career, I always wanted to give back to Aboriginal kids especially because of growing up how I did and the opportunities I had. A career in sport took me around the world and I want kids in these communities to know what is out there.

“I want to inspire self-belief in the kids in these communities so that they strive to see and be a part of the big wide world that is just outside their communities – education is so important, and I want to instill this idea in them.”

Dick will accompany Jerry Penie, Senior Indigenous Field Support Officer throughout 2022 on several community visits out to Menzies, Leonora, Mount Magnet, Wongutha, Cosmo-Newbery and Mulga Queen.

The goal of their community visits is to promote several health and wellbeing messages and connect with the remote communities on behalf of the City.

The pair will check on the hygiene practices of community members and promote health messages in the schools to ensure our communities are prepared for the potential COVID restrictions the new year may pose. They will also undertake pest control, check on the welfare of the dogs in the community, and undertake an audit of the facilities in the area.

Dick’s presence in the community will be a proactive one, keeping Indigenous children interested in out-reach activities and supporting all Indigenous people through continued recognition and engagement in future projects.

Penie adds “Brad may be able to give them hope to be leaders in their communities like he is.”
